A GIFT FROM A MOTHER TO HER DAUGHTER

Daughter examining jewellery

The brief:

Denise knew her daughter Claire liked my pieces and that she was very interested in the making process. She thought that probably a bangle would be a good idea to go with a ring she already owns, so Claire came to visit me to have a good chat and decide what she might like.

THE DESIGN & MAKE PROCESS

Claire asked me to make a bangle decorated with the landscape of the North Downs, which she can see from her house and wanted it to include some of her favourite things.

Pencil sketches of decorative bands featuring rabbits, leaves, and text on grid paper. Some handwritten notes and calculations are visible.

Some Initial Sketched Design Ideas

We met several times through the process, initially to get to know each other and to hear and understand Claire's wishes. Then subsequently to show the design proposals and to select the stone.

The stone chosen was an Oval Madeira Citrine. Claire's favorite is Amber, but we chose the Citrine based on its similar color, alongside its much more practical nature. (Amber, being a resin rather than a stone, would not be advisable for everyday wear.)

Engraved metal strip featuring a scene with two rabbits, an acorn, grass, trees, and a winding path.

The bangle after I have etched the landscape but before the oak leaves were added. Left to right you have Leith Hill Tower, St Barnabas church spire and Denbies vineyard.

"Just a small note to say thank you so much again for my bangle. I really enjoyed seeing you develop it from my (what I thought may be wacky!) initial idea to include a rabbit alongside the oak/acorn, to choosing the stone and finally understanding the significance of a hallmark! I have worn it every day - the size is perfect - and I love that it is unique to me and things that make me smile (aka rabbits and the Surrey Hills) Thank you again, Claire x "
