How Does Commissioning Work?

Commissioning gives you the opportunity to become involved in the creative process.

It might simply be that you like one of my stone set bangles but would prefer a different choice of stone. Or you love the open and close mechanism on my thistle bangle but would prefer to have a different decoration around the band - through chatting together I can understand your passions and come up with suggestions as to what would work for you personally.

A further reason for commissioning is because a client has some much loved silver, an inherited piece perhaps, or simply something that has fallen into disrepair, that they would like to reuse in a more contemporary way. Depending on the nature of the pieces, I may be able to help with this deeply satisfying process of regeneration.

Becoming involved in the commissioning process is surprisingly rewarding on both sides. Over and above the finished product it also brings the gift of human contact and interaction.

  • Do you have a time or a place that you would love to have immortalized in a piece of display art, in a similar vein to the Canal Houses shown in my gallery?

  • Turn your cherished memories into silver masterpieces.

  • Capture your memories, milestones, adventures, and love with a timeless piece.

Talk to me about creating a bespoke work of art that is uniquely special to you, and let your story shine in silver.

Give a gift with a personal touch.

What usually happens

Initially we begin by getting to know each other. We can meet in person at my workshop in the Surrey Hills or virtually via Zoom or a similar platform. Alternatively, I may be able to visit you in your home.

A commission means personal one to one interaction. Come and visit at the workshop , maybe make a day of it in the beautiful Surrey Hills. If you don’t know this area I can give you more info.  We will have a preliminary chat, get to know each other and I will listen to you.

You can have a closer look at some of the pieces I have in stock to give you an idea of the range of techniques that I use to handcraft my work

By the end of our first meeting, which typically takes between half an hour and an hour and a half, I will have a written design brief to work with. With your completion date in mind we will set a date for me to present design drawings and quotation for your review. This stage can be done in person or via email - whichever is most convenient for you. I ask for a 50% deposit once the design has been agreed and before my work commences.

I’ll provide an estimate of the time needed for the commission, taking into account factors such as my availability, whether hallmarking is required, and the handcrafting techniques involved.

If needed through the process, I will offer updates, and you may need to pop back to select stones, have a fitting or simply for an update chat!

THE PRICE

Developing a price for piece of jewellery or artwork is dependent on a number of factors; the materials used, the type and size of any gemstones, and the complexity of the design and construction.

To give you a starting point my ready to wear rings range in price from £80 to £300+, bangles from £75 to £450+, and pendants from £90 to £320+.

Included in a quote all pieces of sterling silver over 7.78g in weight will be hallmarked with full traditional hallmarks by the London Assay Office at Goldsmiths Hall. Lighter items can also be hallmarked as an extra over.

Engraving is another additional service that can bring extra meaning and personalization to a commission, particularly when it is to mark a significant event.

THE REVIEW and FOLLOW-UP

I value feedback from my clients. In today’s internet-connected society, makers rely on client feedback to support future clients in their decision-making process.

In the rare case where a client needs an item corrected, I will, within reason and context, willingly make that correction. To me the joy of a commission is to make something that is going to be loved and valued.

Over the years, I have had many repeat clients and client recommendations.

I look forward to welcoming returning and new clients to my workshop on Ranmore Common.

“... I really enjoyed seeing you develop it from my initial idea, to choosing the stone and finally understanding the significance of a hallmark!

I have worn it every day - the size is perfect - and I love that it is unique to me and things that make me smile

Thank you again, Claire x
