happy 18th birthday ella

the brief:

A special bespoke design experience for an 18th Birthday.

Birthstone: Ruby

Ella's parents wanted to get something special for their daughter but were not entirely sure if they knew what she would like. I suggested that they include her in the design process so that she could personally tell us the kind of jewellery she would truly cherish.

The bangle design Ella chose features a simple indented line tracing the shape of the river Seine. Ella wanted a timeless contemporary piece.

THE DESIGN & MAKE PROCESS

Ella came to our next meeting with lots of wonderful ideas. She was in her final year as a Guildford Cathedral chorister, so music was very important to her, and she wanted to have a memento of this part of her life. She also had a significant affinity with France and was going to study languages in the next stage of her education. She was looking for something that would stand the test of time and allow her to carry her parents' gift with her on her travels.

Having taken on board Ella’s comments I prepared some designs for her to select from.

Hand-drawn sketches on graph paper. The sheet shows several designs.
Silver square pendant with reticulated texture and feature ruby gemstone. Design drawn from Guildford Cathedral logo.

The pendant's form references Guildford Cathedral. The soft texture has been achieved by the technique of fusing and the piece is set off by the inclusion of a single ruby cabachon.

Both the ring and the earstuds have the same fused/reticulated surface texture and include rubies.
